On October 31, 2018, a public reading of the entirety of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein will take place at the University of Manitoba in The Gallery of Student Art, 105 University Centre, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This readathon, which is free and open to the public, and parts of which will be filmed, is part of an international series of readings of the full text of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein on Halloween Day 2018 in honour of the 200th anniversary of the novel’s publication. To date, there are over 450 participants in Frankenreads, from Brazil to Bhutan. At the Winnipeg event, students and administrators will take turns reading the novel aloud throughout the day, which will take approximately nine hours; posters and pamphlets created by Fine Arts students that demonstrate the differences between the novel and its many and varying adaptations will be displayed; popcorn and Frankenstein-themed snacks and drinks will be served; and trivia games will be played, with the opportunity to win Frankenstein-themed prizes such as mugs, drinking glasses, tote bags, t-shirts, and water bottles. There will also be film adaptations of Frankenstein playing throughout the day on the fifth floor of University Centre, Room 521 AB. Attendees are welcome to drop in and out at any time or to stay for the whole day. We look forward to seeing you at this exciting event!
