In honor of the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, let’s throw a party! We will be hosting a discussion group from 1:00 to 2:00 for the book so you can read your favorite excerpt and talk about it with other sci-fi, horror, and female author enthusiasts. As part of the celebration, come by the library dressed up as a Frankenstein themed character, and we’ll have a costume contest at 3:00. We’ll have a photo booth where you can take selfies and share with your friends! See the calendar for show times of two Frankenstein movies in our conference room. These events are part of a worldwide initiative under the Frankenreads project.
Our third Frankenreads screening features perhaps the funniest monster ever brought to the big screen in, and the most classic depictions of the lab assistant Igor! We will be watching both films back to back and following up with a discussion. Don’t worry—snacks will be provided. The screening will be in Smith Hall on the second floor of Old Main, 30 N. Brainard St, Naperville IL, 60540. The first film will start at 5:30pm, and is free and open to the public. Visit frankenreads.org, and manyconversations.org for more information and to find more Frankenstein-inspired events near you!
RESCHEDULED AND MOVED!! We will be screening both films on Wednesday October 24 (not the 17th) in SEYBERT HALL LOUNGE – 208 North Loomis Street, Naperville, IL, 60540 directly after our first live reading session!
Join us for a showing of the 1931 Universal Pictures film, Frankenstein. Associate Professor Kyle Edwards from the Oakland University Cinema Studies Department will introduce the movie and provide a Q&A afterward. Film begins at approx. 6:30 p.m. Refreshments served.
Please register in advance by calling the adult services reference desk at 248-618-7693 or visiting the library’s events page.
In 1818, Mary Shelley released her fabled Monster and his conflicted creator on an unsuspecting world. Two hundred years later, Frankenstein continues to fascinate, frighten, and move us. Celebrate this milestone by learning a little bit more about the novel’s origins and legacy as you listen in on, and contribute to, a conversation with some local Franken-philes. All this, plus a free screening of the very first film adaptation of the story, a long-lost 1910 silent classic by Thomas Edison’s production company! This event is free and open to the public, and there’s no registration necessary.
Join us after-hours in the library for a classic spooky film to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s book Frankenstein! In this 1935 film, Elsa Lanchester plays Mary Shelley as she delivers a frightening sequel to her famous monster story, in an iconic portrayal of the Bride of Frankenstein! Recommended for ages 10 & up.
In addition, throughout the month of October, check out the library’s book display highlighting the many adaptations of the Frankenstein story and the life of author Mary Shelley!
